BJP’s Mayur Borgohain Unseats Congress Leader Debabrata Saikia in Assam’s Nazira

GUWAHATI: In a major political upset for Assam Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mayur Borgohain has won the Nazira Assembly constituency, defeating senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia.

Borgohain secured 98,198 votes, while Saikia polled 51,497 votes. The victory margin stood at 46,701 votes.

Nazira, long considered a Congress stronghold, witnessed a notable shift in voter preference this election cycle. Debabrata Saikia has represented the constituency since 2011 and has been one of the party’s key leaders in the region.

Adding to his political profile, Saikia comes from a prominent family with long-standing involvement in Assam’s politics. His father, former Chief Minister Hiteswar Saikia, and his mother, Hemoprava Saikia, have both earlier represented the same constituency as legislators.

The result marks a significant setback for the Congress in the constituency and signals a changing political landscape in Nazira.
