Mitte’s death was confirmed by his representatives in a statement expressing sadness over the loss of the actor, philanthropist and disability rights advocate. Authorities said the circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation.
Mitte, who lived with cerebral palsy, drew on his personal experiences to portray Walter White Jr, the son of Bryan Cranston’s character, Walter White, in the acclaimed AMC drama. The series ran from 2008 to 2013 and won 16 Emmy Awards.
He was 14 when he was cast in the series, which became his breakthrough role. His performance brought greater visibility to people with disabilities on television and earned him recognition for his contribution to disability representation.
Off screen, Mitte worked to promote disability awareness and inclusion. He served as a spokesperson for performers with disabilities through the Screen Actors Guild and as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy. He also supported initiatives aimed at challenging stereotypes and improving representation for people with disabilities.
Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of three after suffering brain damage at birth. He was adopted as an infant and used leg braces and crutches during much of his childhood. Through athletics and exercise, he eventually no longer needed the walking aids.
Following news of his death, his “Breaking Bad” co-star Bryan Cranston expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his on-screen son.
Mitte also appeared in projects including “Switched at Birth” and “The Guardians of Justice”, continuing his work in television and film while advocating for greater inclusion of people with disabilities.
While some media reports have attributed his death to suicide, local authorities have said the official cause and manner of death remain pending as the investigation continues.
