Newly appointed Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay met Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief and former Chief Minister MK Stalin at his residence on Monday. Vijay, who is an actor-turned-politician, visited Stalin for the first time yesterday after being sworn in after an unprecedented victory in the recent assembly elections. Stalin was accompanied by his son Udayanidhi Stalin in the courtesy meeting. The DMK chief gave Vijay a warm welcome on his arrival at Stalin’s residence in Alwarpet, Chennai. The scene shows Stalin in a black suit hugging Vijay and the two leaders shaking hands.
This was Vijay’s first formal meeting with Stalin after taking over as chief minister During the meeting, the two leaders honored each other with silk shawls and flower bouquets. MK Stalin later said through social media platform X that he congratulated the new Chief Minister on his electoral victory and gave some advice from his political experience. Stalin said the victory meeting was an example of noble political courtesy and wished the new government well. It may be noted that the old pictures of Vijay and Udayanidhi went viral on social media before the meeting but now they are seen in a friendly atmosphere after the election campaign.
The meeting comes just ahead of the crucial trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Assembly in May. Currently, the winning party TVK has 107 seats in the House and a total of 120 MLAs with the support of Congress, VCC, IUML and Left parties. It is also worth noting that parties in this alliance which supported Vijay’s government are still part of the DMK alliance at the national level. However, soon after being sworn in, Vijay criticized the previous DMK government, blaming the state for its debt burden of Rs 10 lakh crore and criticizing the state for having multiple centers of power. The meeting between Stalin and Vijay became the center of attention in state politics.
