The new VB-G Ram Ji Act will come into effect from July 1 and MGNREGA will be repealed

The Union government on Monday made a landmark announcement that the new Developed India — Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood (Rural) (VB-G Ram G Act) will come into force across the country from July. The new law will completely replace the existing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act or MNREGA. The new rules will come into effect in all states and union territories of the country from July 1, the Ministry of Rural Development said in a notification. In another directive, the government has clarified that the old MGNREGA Act of 2005 will be repealed and replaced by the new system but it will not cause any inconvenience to the workers.

The government has assured the people that the transition process from MGNREGA to this new system will be done very smoothly so that the workers do not face any hindrance in their work. The notification said that all jobs under MGNREGA will be automatically migrated to the new system till June, those who currently have e-KYC MGNREGA job cards will remain valid till the new Rural Employment Guarantee Card is issued. The government has also made it clear that no worker will be denied a job just because they don’t have e-KYC and those who don’t have a job card yet can register their names at the panchayat level.

The Ministry of Rural Development is currently drafting policies on wage collection, grievance redressal and other issues in consultation with states and union territories. These regulations will be published and public comment will be sought shortly. The government believes that gaon panchayats are pillars of transformation in rural areas and this new law will help improve village infrastructure and create employment. The government hopes this will help villagers become more self-reliant.
