GUWAHATI: Indian National Congress leader and sitting Member of Parliament Gaurav Gogoi has suffered a defeat in the Jorhat constituency, with counting of votes concluding in favour of Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Hitendra Nath Goswami.
Gogoi secured 46,257 votes, but trailed behind Goswami, who finished with 69,439 votes, resulting in a margin of 23,182 votes. Despite early expectations of a close contest, the Congress candidate remained behind through all rounds of counting as the BJP maintained a steady lead.
The outcome comes as a setback for Gogoi, who had won the seat in the previous Lok Sabha election, defeating the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate at that time. The reversal marks a significant political shift in Jorhat, where the Congress had been looking to retain its foothold.
With the result now declared, the constituency has swung back to the Bharatiya Janata Party, closing a closely watched electoral contest in Assam.
