Court Reserves Order on Bail Plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta in Zubeen Garg Murder Case Till April 30


 

GUWAHATI: The fast track sessions court in Kamrup Metro on Thursday, April 23, reserved its order on the bail and zimma petitions of one of the accused and remanded all seven accused persons to judicial custody in connection with the alleged murder case of Zubeen Garg.

The accused Siddharth Sharma, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Amritprava Mahanta, Sandipon Garg, Nandeswar Borah, and Paresh Baishya were produced before the court through video conferencing from the District Jail in Baksa and the Sub-Jail in Haflong.

The court completed the hearing on the bail and zimma petitions of accused Shyamkanu Mahanta and reserved its order, which is scheduled to be delivered on April 30. Meanwhile, the bail petition of Siddharth Sharma was formally submitted, and the court directed that a copy be furnished to the prosecution through email.

The accused were represented by a team of defence counsels, including senior advocate P. Borah and other engaged lawyers, while the prosecution was represented by Special Public Prosecutor Z. Kamar along with additional and assistant special public prosecutors. The victim, Garima Saikia Garg, was represented by her counsel during the proceedings.

The court further directed that all accused be remanded to judicial custody until April 24 and instructed the jail authorities to ensure their presence through video conferencing on the next date of hearing. The court has fixed April 24 for further hearing on charges and for the prosecution’s response to the bail plea of Siddharth Sharma.

The outcome of the pending bail petitions and the upcoming hearings is expected to determine the next course of legal proceedings in the case.

Zubeen Garg died on September 19 during a swim in Singapore, where he had gone to perform in the North East Festival. The Assam government had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. The SIT later submitted a chargesheet, following which the trial commenced.
