GUWAHATI: A 19-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly beheading her mother with a machete in Donkamukam in Assam’s West Karbi Anglong district in the early hours of Thursday, April 23.
The accused, identified as Pooja Malang, was found in a forested area of Deramukh Lalung village with the severed head of her mother, Anumai Malang (42).
Speaking to GPlus, an official from Baithalangso Police Station said, “The incident occurred at around 10 PM on Wednesday night".
When asked if there was any domestic dispute between the accused and the victim, the official said, “There was no domestic dispute as such, but the accused has a history of having seizure episodes. She was not in a stable condition when she was recovered”, he said.
According to police, the victim’s body has been sent for postmortem examination. Pooja Malang has been booked under Sections 103 (murder) and 119 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police also said that the accused also attacked her father, Premendra Malang, and her sister with the same weapon. However, their injuries are said to be minor.
Family members told investigators that the accused had stepped out in the evening and returned home around 10 PM on Wednesday. “She entered the house with a dao (machete), went straight to her mother and beheaded her,” the police officer said.
Following the incident, the accused allegedly fled and hid in a bamboo grove behind the house. Police launched a search operation during the night but were initially unable to locate her.
She was eventually traced and apprehended in the early hours of Thursday. During the operation, officers also recovered the severed head of the victim from the grove.
Police said a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the motive and reconstruct the sequence of events.
