The accused, Amir Shokeen, was arrested for allegedly making racist remarks against the youth in a video shared on his Instagram account, which has around 1.42 lakh followers.

According to police, the purported video shows Shokeen asking the youth his name before pretending to struggle to pronounce it. He allegedly goes on to use derogatory terms, comment on the youth’s appearance and call him “Michael Jackson”.

Police said Shokeen had been absconding and changing locations to evade arrest. His location was traced to Shahdara earlier on Thursday, before a Sadar Bazaar police team tracked him down in Karol Bagh with the help of technical surveillance.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju had taken to X on Wednesday, promising strict action against Shokeen over the alleged incident.

“People who tolerate such wicked behaviour in the society are also responsible for the spread of hatred,” Rijiju wrote.

The Delhi Police have charged Shokeen under Sections 192, 196, 352 and 353 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The provisions deal with acts intended to provoke a breach of peace, promoting enmity between groups, intentional insult and circulating false statements or rumours, respectively.
