The FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj North police station on Sunday, October 11, under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deal with sexual harassment and acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman, among other offences. Police said an investigation has been initiated.
Officials reportedly said around 10 to 12 students from JNU’s Centre for the Study of Social Systems had filed complaints against Akoijam. At least 11 female students had reportedly submitted sexual harassment complaints against him in May this year.
The complaints alleged that Akoijam invited students to his campus residence on the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some students also alleged that he made obscene and inappropriate remarks in class.
On Friday, JNU dismissed Akoijam from his position at the School of Social Sciences following an inquiry by the university’s internal committee into the allegations.
Reacting to his dismissal, Akoijam described the action as a “witch hunt” and alleged that he had not been given an opportunity to respond to the committee’s findings.
Akoijam represents the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency in Parliament. The allegations against him remain subject to investigation.
