GUWAHATI: Heavy monsoon rains have triggered severe flooding across Assam, submerging the station yard, railway colony and tracks at Simaluguri and forcing the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to suspend train movement on the Simaluguri–Namtiali and Simaluguri–Selenghat sections until further notice.

The disruption has affected several long-distance trains bound for or originating from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, which are being diverted via the Rangiya–Rangapara–Dibrugarh route. Several local passenger services have also been cancelled, short-terminated or short-originated.
Five affected trains, carrying nearly 2,250 passengers, required assistance from the railway authorities. NFR arranged road transport and operated a special train between Sivasagar Town and Dibrugarh/New Tinsukia to help passengers continue their journey. Others were evacuated by road from stations including Mariani and Furkating. Food packets, drinking water and on-the-spot ticket refunds were provided, while help desks with adequate cash reserves have been set up at major stations to assist stranded passengers.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued rainfall across Assam over the next two days, with eastern parts of the state likely to receive the heaviest showers. The ongoing wet spell could lead to further disruption to rail and road connectivity in Upper Assam as authorities continue restoration work and monitor the flood situation.
