GUWAHATI: The Assam government has announced plans to establish four new medical colleges in Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai and Bajali as part of its 2026–27 Budget.

Presenting the Budget in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Friday, July 10, Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the addition of the new institutions will increase the total number of medical colleges in the state to 28.
The proposal forms part of the government's vision of "One District, One University, One Medical College and One Engineering College," aimed at expanding access to higher education and strengthening healthcare infrastructure across Assam.
The new medical colleges are expected to improve opportunities for medical education while enhancing the state's healthcare capacity by increasing the availability of trained medical professionals and healthcare facilities.
The government said the initiative is intended to ensure equitable access to quality higher education and healthcare infrastructure across all districts. while supporting Assam's long-term human resource and public health goals.
