GUWAHATI: Gauhati University has extended the entry and exit timings of its Namghar Colony Gate near Vidyanagar to 9 pm for students carrying valid identity cards, following a two-day protest over the early closure of the university gate and an alleged confrontation with the registrar.

The decision was announced through a notice issued on Tuesday, September 15, bringing a temporary end to the students’ agitation that began on Monday, September 14. The extended timing will remain in effect until further orders, with the university citing special circumstances.
The notice, issued on the directive of the competent authority, was signed by Gauhati University Security Officer Pankaj Kalita.
The protest was triggered after a group of students approached the registrar’s office to submit a memorandum regarding the difficulties they said were being caused by the closure of the university gate at 5 pm.
According to the protesting students, the registrar allegedly asked them to “get out” when they approached his office. They objected to the alleged remarks and the manner in which their concerns were handled, subsequently gathering outside the registrar’s office and raising slogans.
The students said the 5 pm gate closure had created difficulties for those who needed to enter or leave the campus later in the evening. They demanded that the university administration intervene and revise the existing gate timings.
The demonstration continued into Tuesday, with students pressing the administration to address both the gate closure issue and their grievances regarding the alleged remarks.
Following the continued protest, the university announced that students with valid identity cards would be permitted to use the Namghar Colony Gate until 9 pm as a temporary arrangement.
