GUWAHATI:The Gauhati University Post Graduate Students’ Union (PGSU) election for the General Secretary (GS) post has been put on hold for now, with the university deciding that no candidate will be declared elected to the post at this stage.

According to an election notification issued on September 28, the university’s Grievances Redressal Cell has decided to defer the election for the General Secretary and Social Service Secretary posts following complaints related to the nomination process.
The decision comes amid the controversy surrounding Nayan Akash Bora’s candidature. Students had earlier alleged that Bora’s name was included in an initial nomination list but was later removed, despite his withdrawal being limited to the President’s post. The development had triggered protests on the Gauhati University campus, with students demanding clarity over the election process.
The Grievances Redressal Cell, in its September 28 meeting, noted that Bora was allegedly pursuing two regular Master’s degrees simultaneously at Gauhati University when he filed his nomination papers. The Cell said the matter required further examination in light of university ordinances, UGC guidelines and recommendations concerning eligibility for contesting student union elections.
The Cell has now decided to constitute an independent inquiry committee headed by a legal expert, preferably not below the rank of a sitting High Court judge or an equivalent officer, to examine the matter concerning Bora and another candidate, Pratik Sharma.
As a result, while the counting of votes for the PGSU election remains scheduled for October 1, the election for the GS and Social Service Secretary posts will not be conducted along with the other posts.
The notification states that the election for these two posts will be held on a later date if the nominations filed by the aggrieved candidates are found valid following the inquiry.
Therefore, no candidate has won or been declared elected to the GS post at present as per the notification. The earlier declaration of a candidate as elected unopposed to the post now remains subject to the university’s further decision following the inquiry.
