GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) conducted eviction drives in Jalukbari and Basistha Chariali late on Thursday evening, July 30, as part of its ongoing large-scale drive to remove encroachments from public spaces.

The drive aims to clear unauthorised occupation of roads, footpaths and other public spaces, ensuring smoother traffic movement and safer passage for pedestrians.
A GMC official said the corporation is first sensitising street vendors and asking them to vacate public spaces if they continue operating there.
“We have been asked to firstly sensitise the street vendors. Following which, if they still operate in public spaces, roads, footpaths, we come and ask them to vacate the place,” the official said.
The official added that the GMC has recently constructed dedicated vendor markets in several locations and street vendors operating along roadsides have been asked to shift their businesses there.
The eviction drive is part of the GMC's wider efforts to reclaim public spaces and make Guwahati more organised, accessible and pedestrian-friendly.
