The civic body stated that the initiative comes amid the growing challenges posed by rapid population growth and increasing pressure on public infrastructure in the city. According to GMC, maintaining order in public spaces has become essential for ensuring sustainable urban mobility.

As part of the ongoing drive, roadside encroachments in Fancy Bazaar are being systematically removed to reduce traffic bottlenecks and make roads more accessible for commuters and pedestrians alike.

The eviction drive intends to create more organised and safer public spaces while ensuring smoother vehicular movement in densely populated and highly congested areas of the city.

“Public spaces must remain accessible to the public. A city functions best when roads and footpaths are free from encroachments,” GMC stated while highlighting the importance of planned urban management.

Fancy Bazaar, known as the commercial heart of Guwahati, witnesses heavy traffic congestion on a daily basis due to overcrowding, roadside vendors, and illegal encroachments.
