Guwahati: Parking at Bhangagarh Bus Stop Causes Daily Traffic Congestion on GS Road

GUWAHATI: Unregulated parking of public buses near the Bhangagarh flyover has been causing severe traffic congestion on Guwahati's Guwahati-Shillong (GS) Road, disrupting daily commutes and affecting traffic movement around the stretch from Bhangagarh flyover towards Paltan Bazar.

Commuters report heavy congestion on both the Bhangagarh flyover and service lanes below it, turning routine journeys into prolonged delays. The situation is further aggravated by poorly managed bus parking immediately after the Bhangarh flyover descent.

Vehicles coming off the Bhangagarh flyover frequently encounter stationary public buses and commercial passenger vehicles near the bus stop. Instead of stopping briefly to allow passengers to board and alight, bus drivers reportedly park for extended periods while competing for fares, reducing the multi-lane thoroughfare to a narrow bottleneck.

During peak hours, buses parked haphazardly across the exit lane bring traffic to a standstill, forcing cars, two-wheelers and emergency vehicles to brake suddenly. The resulting queues often extend back beyond the Bhangagarh flyover.

The congestion is not limited to the Bhangagarh stretch. Traffic tailbacks caused by the parked buses extend to the Bhangagarh flyover and the service roads below it, affecting thousands of office workers, students and emergency responders who rely on GS Road as a major city route.

Commuters have called on the Guwahati Traffic Police and the local administration to take immediate action to address the problem. Their demands include strict enforcement of no-parking rules, fines for buses parked longer than necessary, relocation or redesign of the bus bay away from the flyover descent, and deployment of traffic wardens during peak hours to regulate bus movement and maintain lane discipline.
