GUWAHATI: In a move aimed at easing persistent traffic congestion in Fancy Bazar, S S Road, M S Road and H B Road in Guwahati’s Fancy Bazar will be declared “No Vending Zones”, with vehicle parking also prohibited along these roads.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai at Janata Bhawan, to discuss measures to improve traffic movement and pedestrian safety in the area.
The restrictions will be implemented after adequate awareness is created among traders, vendors, commuters and the general public. A formal notice will also be served before the measures come into force.
It was further decided that another meeting would be held shortly with the MLA of Guwahati Central, District Commissioner of Kamrup Metropolitan, Commissioner of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and DTO (Enforcement), Kamrup Metropolitan, to discuss the detailed implementation strategy and modalities.
The initiative is aimed at creating a more organised, safer and congestion-free Fancy Bazar, while ensuring better mobility for commuters and pedestrians and facilitating smooth business activities in one of Guwahati’s busiest commercial areas.
Minister Kaushik Rai directed all concerned stakeholders to work in close coordination to ensure effective implementation of the proposed measures while keeping the interests of the public, traders and the business community in view.
The meeting was attended by Vijay Kumar Gupta, MLA, Guwahati Central; Mrigen Sarania, Mayor, Guwahati Municipal Corporation; Chinmoy Prakash Phookan, Commissioner, GMC; Mrinmoy Goswami, ADCP (Traffic-II), Assam Police; Dipjyoti Dadhara, APS, ACP Traffic-II; the Deputy Mayor and councillors of GMC; senior GMC officials; and representatives of the Fancy Bazar Committee.
