The incident took place on Saturday near the Dinesh Goswami flyover in Bharalumukh, a busy area that has seen occasional cases of street crimes such as chain snatching in the past.

Police said the accused targeted a woman and fled with her gold chain. In his haste, he left behind his scooter at the scene, which later became a key clue in the investigation.

The crime was captured on nearby CCTV cameras, helping police identify the suspect and trace his movements. Acting on the footage and local inputs, Bharalumukh Police launched a search operation and arrested the accused, identified as Hiren Baruah.

According to the reports, soon after the incident, Baruah went to a bank and pledged the stolen 14-gram gold chain to obtain a loan of around ₹85,000. He reportedly used his own bank account for the transaction at the Central Bank of India’s Kumarpara branch in Guwahati.

The accused is currently in custody, and further investigation is underway.
