GUWAHATI: The first edition of ‘Hemkosh Parishishtha’, a linguistic supplement to the Assamese dictionary Hemkosh, was unveiled in Guwahati on Sunday, September 20, featuring nearly 20,000 words from Bodo, Karbi, Mising and Rabha languages.

The publication was launched at the Kanaklal Barua Auditorium on the premises of the Assam State Museum in Guwahati's Ambari.
The supplement brings together vocabulary from four major tribal languages of Assam and aims to promote greater linguistic exchange and understanding among different communities.
Jayanta Baruah, great-grandson of Hem Chandra Barua, who compiled the first Assamese dictionary Hemkosh, said the initiative seeks to strengthen linguistic understanding and equality among different communities.
Speaking to the media, Baruah said, “This will help build greater equality among the different tribes and communities and, in turn, strengthen the Assamese language as a whole."
The project has been prepared over nearly two years with contributions from scholars, intellectuals and linguists associated with Bodo, Karbi, Mising and Rabha languages.
According to Baruah, the first edition includes around 20,000 words and is intended to serve as an introductory reference for people looking to learn the four languages through Assamese.
The publication will be expanded in subsequent editions, with more words expected to be added to the sections on Bodo, Karbi, Mising and Rabha.
