GUWAHATI: IIT Bombay has initiated the replacement of ceiling fans in hostel rooms with wall-mounted fans, according to reports, with the move reportedly predating the recent death by suicide of 22-year-old BTech student Sahil Wakode.

An image showing several wall-mounted fans arriving on the institute’s campus as part of renovation work has gone viral on social media, drawing attention amid heightened sensitivity following Sahil’s death last week.
Reports suggest that the institute began considering the replacement of ceiling fans after a student died by suicide in July. Discussions on replacing the fans had reportedly been underway for around two months, with the proposal recently receiving approval.
The first batch of wall-mounted fans has now reached the campus, and installation work is expected to begin soon. The replacement is being described as part of a renovation project.
Students have confirmed the development, while the IIT Bombay administration has not issued an official statement on the matter or publicly denied the reports.
