GUWAHATI: Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting category at the Asian Games in Nagoya on Wednesday, September 23, securing her maiden Asian Games medal and completing a full set of major international medals.

Chanu lifted a total of 198kg, managing 87kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk to finish second.
North Korea’s Ri Song Gum won the gold medal with a total lift of 215kg, while Indonesia’s Wijayana Luluk Diana Tri claimed the bronze medal.
The silver also made Chanu India’s first Asian Games weightlifting medallist since Karnam Malleswari won silver in Bangkok in 1998.
Chanu had previously won Olympic and Commonwealth Games medals, including gold at three successive Commonwealth Games. However, an Asian Games medal had remained out of reach.
At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, Chanu narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth after an injury prevented her from completing her final clean and jerk attempt.
