GUWAHATI: Karbi Anglong Police rescued a group of dogs from an illegal smuggling attempt after intercepting a vehicle travelling from Diphu towards Dimapur.

Acting on a tip-off, police stopped the vehicle and found the dogs confined in jute sacks, with their mouths tied. The animals were rescued and secured, while legal action was initiated against those involved in the illegal dog smuggling.
The incident comes amid repeated reports of dogs being transported from Assam towards Nagaland, with demand for dog meat cited in previous police investigations into such cases.
In November 2024, police in Mangaldoi rescued 19 dogs and arrested four suspected members of a smuggling syndicate after the animals were found confined in sacks. Police said at the time that the accused were transporting the dogs to Nagaland.
In December 2022, two men from Karbi Anglong were arrested in Darrang district for trapping dogs using drugged food and attempting to transport them to Dimapur.
The repeated seizures have brought attention to the illegal transportation of dogs from Assam. Police have urged people to remain alert and report suspicious movement or transportation of animals to the authorities.
