GUWAHATI: Kamrup Metropolitan District Commissioner Swapneel Paul has directed the concerned departments to inspect the Maharaja Prithu Flyover connecting Noonmati-Dighalipukhuri and ensure that no vehicle users face accidents during the rainy season.

During a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee on July 4, Saturday, he also directed to inspect other new flyovers from time to time.
Multiple vehicles have slipped and skidded on the Maharaja Prithu Flyover following each spell of rain, raising fresh concerns over commuter safety on the recently inaugurated flyover. In a tragic incident, a man was killed and another sustained serious injuries after a scooter and a motorcycle collided head-on on Maharaj Prithu Flyover in Guwahati earlier this week.
He also directed officials to resolve the problems of open manholes in various parts of the city as soon as possible.
During the meeting, all the departments involved in road safety were asked to fulfill their respective responsibilities in preventing road accidents and reducing the number of deaths in the coming days The meeting further discussed issues related to ensuring proper control and management of the road to Guwahati Medical College Hospital, maintaining public convenience, road rehabilitation works undertaken by some road-excavating bodies, control of green buses, closure of unlicensed bars.
The meeting was attended by Kamrup Metropolitan District Transport Officer Himanshu Kumar Das, among other senior district officials. He said the transport department will take various measures to control drunk drivers and strengthen various aspects related to road safety in the coming days in order to maintain orderly and safe traffic in the city. He urged all classes of vehicle users to abide by the road rules and traffic laws.
