Assam Reviews Bahini-Bharalu Basin Plan to Tackle Guwahati Waterlogging


 

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government on Saturday, July 4, reviewed the GIS-based Comprehensive Drainage Master Plan for Guwahati and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Bahini-Bharalu Basin as part of its efforts to tackle the city's recurring waterlogging problem.

The review meeting, chaired by Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai, focused on proposed drainage interventions aimed at improving Guwahati's stormwater management system and strengthening the city's resilience against urban flooding.

During the meeting, officials examined the recommendations and technical proposals contained in the Comprehensive Drainage Master Plan and the Bahini-Bharalu Basin DPR. Discussions centred on ensuring that the proposed measures are practical, sustainable and capable of effectively improving the city's drainage infrastructure.

The minister directed the consultants to revise and refine the Master Plan and the DPR wherever necessary, incorporating the observations and suggestions made during the review. He also stressed the need for a thorough re-examination of the revised proposals before final approval to ensure that no shortcomings remain.

The meeting further highlighted the importance of adopting an integrated and long-term approach to urban flood management, with a focus on improving drainage efficiency, enhancing resilience against extreme rainfall events and ensuring the timely implementation of priority projects.

Senior officials from the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), Assam Urban Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (AUIDFCL), Public Works Department (Roads), Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and other concerned departments attended the meeting.
