Meghalaya Introduces School-Based Initiative for Girls’ Health and Menstrual Hygiene


 

GUWAHATI: In a new initiative aimed at improving health, hygiene and sanitation facilities for girl students, the Meghalaya government on Thursday, July 2 launched "She Thrives", a statewide programme that will be implemented across schools. The initiative was launched by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma during the inauguration of a new boarding facility at Pine Mount School in Shillong.

The event was held as part of the school's 125th anniversary celebrations.

The Chief Minister also spoke about the importance of providing a safe and supportive learning environment for girls and encouraged students to remain confident and actively pursue their aspirations. He later interacted with students and inspected the newly inaugurated hostel building.

The newly launched "She Thrives" initiative focuses on strengthening menstrual hygiene management and sanitation facilities in schools. Under the programme, schools will be equipped with sanitary pad vending machines, incinerators for the safe disposal of menstrual waste, improved girl-friendly toilets, access to safe drinking water and awareness sessions on menstrual hygiene, nutrition and adolescent health.

The programme was attended by ministers, senior government officials, education department representatives, teachers and students.
