GUWAHATI: Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) in Panbazar, Guwahati, is expected to become operational by November 16 as Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) prepares to shift most of its departments to the facility for repair and reconstruction work, Assam Health Minister Ashok Singhal said on Saturday, October 24.

The relocation is targeted for completion by November 15, with the minister emphasising that patient services must continue without disruption during the transition.
“We are trying to shift GMCH operations there by November 15, and I want that by November 16, MMCH is operational. The GMCH departments will be shifted there for repair and reconstruction works. We cannot allow patients to feel any discomfort,” Singhal said at a press conference.
He added that almost all GMCH departments would operate from MMCH during the reconstruction period, with only a few departments potentially excluded from the shift.
Addressing concerns over delays in diagnostic test reports at government hospitals, the minister acknowledged that the high patient load at medical colleges was putting pressure on healthcare services. He said delays could occur when the number of patients exceeded manageable levels.
On dialysis services, Singhal said the state had opened more than 30 new dialysis centres over the past three months, expanding access to treatment across Assam.
The planned relocation is expected to allow reconstruction work at the GMCH campus to proceed while hospital services continue from MMCH. The transition will require coordination to ensure that patients can access essential departments and treatment without significant disruption.
