The giraffe calf was born on August 16, but had remained unnamed until the Minister’s visit to the zoo.
Gagan is the offspring of Vijaya and Vijay, two giraffes brought to the Assam State Zoo from different parts of the country. Vijaya was brought from Patna in 2022, while Vijay arrived from Mysuru in 2019.
The pair had previously welcomed their first calf in 2023. With Gagan’s arrival, the giraffe family at the zoo has now grown to four members.
Mallabaruah said the birth of the new calf reflects the Assam State Zoo’s continued commitment to animal welfare, care and conservation.
The naming ceremony was held during the Minister’s visit to inaugurate the Wildlife Week celebrations at the zoo.
