In a brief statement, Secretary Rajib Bhattacharyya said that no decision or step has been taken to remove the Bodo language from the Legislative Assembly building premises.
“Some repair work was carried out on the front façade of the Assam Legislative Assembly building, and because some of that work, this confusion arose,” the statement in Assamese read.
In light of the controversy generated by a false rumour, this clarification was issued on behalf of the Assam Legislative Assembly Secretariat.
‘Assam Legislative Assembly’ is written in Assamese, Bodo, and English on the front facade of the premise.
In a post on Facebook, Anjali Daimari, an artist and activist, had expressed resentment after media reports suggested Bodo language being purportedly removed.
“I strongly condemn the removal of the inscribed Boro language signage from the main building of the Assam Legislative Assembly Bhawan. Why do such acts happen repeatedly? On what grounds was it removed, and who is responsible for this?” she wrote.
The Boro language is officially recognized under the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India and holds legal status as an associate official language of Assam.
“How can this be done? What is the problem? the Boro people or the Boro language? Stop showing such hatred and jealousy. This is a clear example of suppression, oppression, negligence, and complete injustice toward us,” she furiously wrote on the social media.
