With the league’s future mired in uncertainty, the Guwahati-based club aims to close out a season marked by inconsistency. NEUFC currently sit 10th in the 14-team table with 13 points from 12 matches. Critics have frequently questioned the squad’s balance and tactical style of play this season.
The Highlanders, however, showed a glimpse of their potential in their previous home fixture on May 10, securing a dominant 4-1 victory over Chennaiyin FC.
“Whether it will be my last game, I don’t know. Whether it would be someone else’s last game, we don’t know,” Juan Pedro Benali, the head coach of NEUFC told reporters at a pre-match press conference on Monday.
Benali, who has been at the helm since May 2023, said the team’s focus remains on performance.
“All we want to put up is a good performance. We want to play, and entertain,” he said.
Despite their ISL struggles, Benali’s tenure has seen historic success. Under his stewardship, NEUFC captured back-to-back Durand Cup championships in 2024 and 2025.
Tuesday’s opponents, Mohammedan SC, are currently bottom of the table, setting up a battle for pride as both sides look to finish the season strongly.
