Shubman Gill Named India ODI Captain as BCCI Unveils Squad for Afghanistan Series


 

GUWAHATI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday, May 19, announced India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan during a meeting held in Guwahati.

Shubman Gill has been named captain of the side, while Shreyas Iyer will serve as vice-captain. The squad features senior players including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav. Wicketkeeper-batters KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan have also been included in the team.

Young players such as Nitish Kumar Reddy, Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey have earned spots in the squad, while Arshdeep Singh and Prasidh Krishna will strengthen the pace attack. According to the BCCI, the inclusion of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya remains subject to fitness.

The BCCI also announced India’s squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan, with KL Rahul named vice-captain under skipper Shubman Gill, replacing Rishabh Pant in the leadership role. Pant remains part of the Test squad as a wicketkeeper-batter but has been relieved of vice-captaincy duties. He has also not been included in the ODI squad for the subsequent three-match series.
