GUWAHATI: A massive tunnel collapse in Sikkim's Namchi district has claimed the lives of at least eight workers, while several others remain trapped inside an under-construction tunnel, as rescue efforts continue amid heavy rain and a suspected methane gas leak.

The incident occurred on Monday, July 20, at the Samardung tunnel, part of the Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project, after a landslide blocked the tunnel entrance. Survivors reportedly heard a "blast-like" sound moments before the collapse, though authorities are yet to determine the exact cause of the accident.
According to officials, 12 workers have been rescued from the site. However, more than a dozen workers are still feared trapped deep inside the tunnel. Rescue operations have been complicated by continuous rainfall, unstable debris and dangerously high methane gas levels, making it unsafe for emergency personnel to enter the affected section.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Sikkim Police and Fire & Emergency Services are carrying out round-the-clock rescue operations. Authorities are using specialised equipment while continuously monitoring gas levels before advancing further into the tunnel.
Officials said the priority remains reaching the trapped workers safely despite the hazardous conditions inside the tunnel. The exact number of people still trapped is being verified as rescue operations continue.
Sikkim Chief Minister P S Tamang expressed grief over the deaths and assured that the authorities are deploying every resource available.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic incident at the under-construction tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung, Jholungey, in Namchi district. My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the workers who have lost their lives. In this hour of grief, the thoughts and prayers of the entire state are with the bereaved families, and we stand firmly by them during this difficult time,” he said.
