As Chief Minister of Assam Dr° Sujata Gurung Chowdhury sent a special open letter to Himanta Biswa Sharma on the day of his swearing-in. He wrote the letter in response to various controversial comments and allegations leveled against him by the Chief Minister during the elections. Opposition candidate Kunki Chowdhury’s mother Sujata Gurung Chowdhury has made serious allegations of defamation of her character against the Chief Minister. He noted that during the election campaign he was labeled as a beef eater, non-traditionalist and anti-Indian communist without any evidence, which had a significant impact on his personal life.
In the letter, he specifically mentions a photograph taken at a museum in Denver. He said that the Chief Minister’s comment on the photo is false and the museum owners have already explained it. How such propaganda can be dangerous for a common citizen, he expressed with great sadness. He even said in the letter that publishing the pictures of his minor children threatened their lives. He directly blames the Chief Minister for the harsh comments made in the society about his food heritage or personal opinion.
He has also opened up about his intellectual and political views. He asserted that reading thousands of books in his personal library did not make him anti-national. “People’s thinking changes with age,” he said, adding that he was 56 years old. He describes himself as a Hindu by birth and culture who does not use religion for politics. He said that in a democracy everyone has the right to choose their food, religion and ideology.
Finally, he addressed the Chief Minister saying that the election is over and now he is the Chief Minister of the entire state. Therefore, as an elected representative, he has to be accountable to the people. Sujata Gurung Chowdhury demanded a public apology from the Chief Minister.
