Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar Found Dead at Police Headquarters; Suicide Suspected


 

GUWAHATI: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, was found dead at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday, July 20. Police suspect the incident to be a case of suicide.

According to preliminary information, Dhankar is believed to have shot himself with his service pistol.

His body was reportedly found in the washroom adjoining his chamber at the police headquarters on Akhaura Road in Agartala at around 11:40 AM. He was immediately rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant (GB) Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, along with senior government and security officials, visited the hospital after receiving news of the incident.

No official statement has been issued regarding the circumstances surrounding Dhankar's death. Police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation into the incident.

Dhankar, a 1994-batch IPS officer, assumed charge as the Director General of Police on May 18, 2025. During his career, he served in Tripura for nearly 18 years in various capacities.
