GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday, September 3, announced that two new police battalions will be formed in the state.

Speaking at a press briefing on the outcomes of the recently concluded Superintendents of Police (SP) Conference at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, Sarma said one of the new battalions will be raised for the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), while the other will focus on the security of key oil and energy establishments in the state.
“We are raising a new battalion for the SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) in Assam. Additionally, keeping in mind the security of Oil India, ONGC, etc., another police battalion- meaning two new police battalions overall- will be formed in Assam, as decided in this conference,” the Chief Minister said.
The announcement came as part of several decisions taken during the SP conference aimed at strengthening the Assam Police and improving its functioning.
Sarma said the conference focused on a number of areas, including forensic science, prison administration and the Directorate of Prosecution.
“Towards strengthening the Assam Police, several important decisions have been made- advancing forensic science, improving prison administration, and strengthening the Directorate of Prosecution,” Sarma said.
The Chief Minister said the decisions taken during the conference were aimed at further strengthening the state’s policing and related systems.
