The gesture was seen as a playful reference to the widely used internet nickname “Melodi”- a portmanteau combining the names of Meloni and Modi- which has become popular on social media following several light-hearted interactions between the two leaders at international summits.

Sharing a video of the exchange on her social media accounts, Meloni wrote, “Thank you for the gift.”

In the clip, both leaders are seen holding a packet of Melody toffee and laughing over the reference. Meloni says in the video, “Prime Minister Modi brought as a gift a very, very good toffee.”

“Melody,” PM Modi responds.

The “Melodi” trend gained widespread attention through viral clips, memes and selfies featuring the two leaders during multilateral events and global summits. In June 2025, Meloni had shared a selfie video with PM Modi during the G7 Summit interactions captioned, “Hello, from the Melodi team.”

Since then, their informal and friendly public interactions at international events have frequently gone viral online, drawing significant attention across social media platforms.
