GUWAHATI: A World War II-era unexploded ordnance (UXO) was recovered from a civilian area in Assam’s Ledo-Lekhapani on Thursday, April 30, prompting a swift response from the Indian Army to avert any potential danger.

As per officials, the explosive device, measuring nearly 12 inches in length and around 6 inches in diameter, was discovered in a populated area, raising concerns over public safety and the risk of accidental detonation.
Following the alert, a specialised Bomb Disposal team from the Indian Army’s Red Shield Sappers was immediately deployed to the spot. Upon reaching the location, the team cordoned off the area, evacuated nearby residents and enforced strict safety measures to prevent any untoward incident.
The unexploded bomb was then carefully secured and transported to a designated safe zone away from human habitation. Army personnel later carried out a controlled disposal operation, successfully neutralising the device without any damage or casualties.
Officials stated that the operation was conducted with utmost precision and in accordance with established bomb disposal protocols. The timely intervention by the Army ensured the safety of local residents and prevented a potentially hazardous situation.
The incident highlights the continued presence of wartime remnants in parts of the Northeast and reflects the Indian Army’s preparedness and commitment towards ensuring the safety and security of civilians in the region.
