The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) had intercepted and seized those plastic items.
Taking to X, Kaushik Rai, Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, said that the “war against pollution will continue until we achieve total compliance for a plastic-free Guwahati.”
Since July 2022, the Government of India has banned a set of single use plastic items, including – ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice- cream sticks, polystyrene (Thermocol) for decoration, plastic plates, cups, glasses, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping or packing films around sweet boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 micron, stirrers, among others.
But the enforcement on the ground remains elusive, with single-use plastic items being recovered from drains and garbage dumps across Guwahati.
