On July 3, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the development in a post on X, announcing that Matcha tea is now being produced at the Chota Tingrai Tea Estate in Tinsukia.
Calling it a major milestone for Assam's tea industry, the Chief Minister said the move into Matcha production will help strengthen the global identity of Assam Tea and open up new opportunities in international markets.
He also noted that the achievement was made possible through the strong ties between India and Japan, along with their collaboration in various sectors. According to him, Assam's Matcha has already received a handsome price at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, highlighting its growing market potential.
The first-ever batch of commercially produced Indian Matcha tea was officially sold at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre (GTAC), marking the country's entry into the commercial Matcha market.
Matcha, a finely ground green tea powder that has become increasingly popular worldwide for its health benefits and unique taste, is widely used in beverages, desserts, and other food products. With commercial production now underway, Assam is looking to tap into the rapidly growing global demand for Matcha while expanding beyond its traditional black tea industry.
