The by-election is scheduled to be held on October 6, with counting of votes set for October 9.
Sarma, a former administrative officer, had formally joined the BJP on Tuesday, nearly a month before the by-election. His entry into the BJP had triggered a political controversy, with questions being raised over election fairness and his previous administrative role in the district.
Sarma had been serving as the Nagaon DC since December 2025 and had also held the responsibility of District Election Officer.
The Congress, which won the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general election, had approached the Election Commission and filed a formal complaint against Sarma, raising concerns over alleged administrative irregularities and his political ambitions ahead of the by-election.
