GUWAHATI: The Assam Cabinet, at its meeting on Thursday, September 24, approved the Assam Muslim Marriage Registration (Compulsory) Rules, 2026, establishing a uniform procedural framework for the compulsory registration of Muslim marriages across the state.

The rules provide the procedural framework for implementing the Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Act, 2024, which makes registration of Muslim marriages and divorces mandatory in Assam. The 2024 Act applies across the state.
The move is aimed at standardising the registration process through designated government authorities. The existing law provides for Marriage and Divorce Registrars and the issuance of official marriage certificates following completion of the registration procedure.
The development comes as Assam continues to operationalise the 2024 legislation governing the compulsory registration of Muslim marriages and divorces. A Gauhati High Court order earlier this year also referred to the registration of marriages and divorces under the 2024 Act.
