Assam’s Tezpur University Approved as Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Assamese


 

GUWAHATI: The Ministry of Education through an Office Memorandum issued on October 1, approved the establishment of five Centres of Excellence for studies in five classical languages-Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Pali and Prakrit.

For studies in Classical Assamese, Tezpur University in Assam has been approved as the Centre of Excellence.

“After Assamese was accorded the status of a Classical Language, we had been pursuing the establishment of a dedicated centre for its study with the Government of India. I am delighted to share that the Centre has approved the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Assamese at Tezpur University,” Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X on October 2 while sharing the Office Memorandum.

The Centres of Excellence for studies in these classical languages have been approved with a view to strengthening academic research, digitisation, preservation and dissemination of the heritage of these classical languages, the Office Memorandum states.

The other Centres of Excellence will be for Classical Bengali at Visva-Bharati University, West Bengal; Classical Marathi at Deccan College Post-Graduate and Research Institute, Pune; Classical Pali at Central University of Odisha; and Classical Prakrit at Central University of Gujarat.

The Government of India conferred ‘Classical Language’ status on Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali on October 3, 2024.
