GUWAHATI: A tragic road accident in Assam’s Tamulpur late on Friday night, April 24, claimed the life of a young Bihu dancer and left at least 11 others injured after a minivan carrying a Bihu troupe collided head-on with a trailer truck.

The deceased has been identified as Nishamani Haloi, a member of the ‘Bhaskarjyoti Bihu Husori Dal’ from Haribhanga in Nalbari district. A resident of Nij Jhargaon in Tamulpur, Haloi reportedly died on the spot due to the impact of the collision.
Taking to X, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his condolences over the incident, praying for eternal peace for the departed soul and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
The accident occurred near Nowakhat village along the Tamulpur–Nagrijuli connecting road when a trailer truck bearing Punjab registration rammed into the minivan from the opposite direction.
According to initial reports, the minivan was carrying around 35 members of the Bhaskarjyoti Bihu Husori group from Haribhanga in Tihu, Nalbari. The troupe was on its way to Tamulpur to participate in an open Bihu competition at Bangalipara when the accident took place.
At least 11 members of the troupe sustained serious injuries in the crash. The injured have been identified as Arun Medhi, Bidyut Das, Jagat Ray, driver Pankaj Baishya, Ankita Das, Ratan Kalita, Nitu Baruah, Shivani Baruah, Kabyashree Saruwa, and Dibakar Moran, among others.
Five of the injured are said to be in critical condition and have been referred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for advanced medical treatment.
