The accident occurred around 11.30 PM near a petrol pump in the Mith Chapori area of Balipara, when a minivan travelling from Tezpur towards Rangapara collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction.

According to police, two of the occupants died on the spot, while three others succumbed to their injuries after being taken to a nearby government hospital.

The deceased have been identified as Har Gobinda Hajuwari, Pranjal Bania, Sanjay Mech, Pappu Bora and Nayan Swargiary. All five were residents of Batabari under Rangapara police station.

Police suspect that the minivan driver may have lost control of the vehicle before crossing into the opposite lane. Investigators are also examining whether excessive speed contributed to the accident.

The truck driver reportedly fled the scene following the collision but was later arrested by police.

Both vehicles have been seized, while the bodies have been sent for postmortem examination. Further investigation into the accident is underway.
