Guwahati Set to Embrace ‘Purple City’ Theme Under GMC’s Swachh Abhiyan 2.0

GUWAHATI: Guwahati is set to don a vibrant new look as the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) plans to promote a “Purple City” theme as part of its city-wide cleanliness and beautification drive. Inspired by the Kopou Phool (Foxtail Orchid), a flower deeply associated with Assam’s Bihu celebrations, the initiative encourages localities to paint lanes, public spaces, and community areas in shades of purple.

To boost participation, GMC has introduced a special Purple City category, which will carry 50 marks, making it one of the most significant components of the competition.

The announcement was made on Saturday, May 30 during the launch of Guwahati Swachh Abhiyan 2.0, a city-wide cleanliness competition aimed at enhancing sanitation standards and encouraging community involvement in beautification efforts.

Addressing the media, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania said the initiative was approved during the corporation’s general meeting. The competition will see participation from development committees, self-help groups (SHGs), clubs, and other local organisations across the city.

Registration for the competition will be open from June 1 to June 15 across GMC’s six divisions. Detailed guidelines and implementation plans will be shared with participants after June 16, while the competition itself will run from July 1 to August 31.

Apart from the Purple City category, the competition will include several other evaluation parameters, with most categories carrying 10 marks each, aimed at promoting cleanliness, waste management, sanitation, and overall civic upkeep.
