Addressing the media, Guwahati Mayor Mrigen Sarania announced that the GMC will introduce a monthly user fee of ₹30 per household for garbage collection services. While similar charges had earlier been collected by certain NGOs in a few localities, this will be the first time that a uniform fee is being implemented by the civic body across Guwahati.

According to the mayor, the revenue generated from the user fee will be utilised to enhance waste management, improve garbage collection systems, and strengthen sanitation services across the city.

Sarania also stated that the GMC would extend support to neighbourhoods interested in installing lighting facilities in lanes and other public spaces as part of efforts to improve civic infrastructure and public convenience.

As part of the initiative, nearly 1,000 Swachh Sakhis from various self-help groups will be engaged to oversee cleanliness drives and sanitation activities. Each Swachh Sakhi will monitor around 300 households, including supervising door-to-door waste collection to ensure efficient and timely service delivery.
