GUWAHATI: Ramanuj Goswami, accused of killing his wife Riya Talukdar Goswami and severing her head, surrendered before police and confessed to the crime, police said on Monday, September 7.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Guwahati, T R Pegu, briefed the media at the Hatigaon Police Station premises and said Goswami had confessed to killing his wife during an altercation on the morning of September 3.
According to police, the couple had been involved in frequent disputes over various issues, including Goswami’s allegations regarding his wife’s involvement in an extramarital relationship.
Police said they received information at around 9.45 PM on Sunday that the couple, who lived at Basisthapur Bylane No. 4, House No. 14, had stopped responding to calls from their families.
A team from Hatigaon Police Station subsequently reached the residence and found 25-year-old Riya Talukdar Goswami dead inside the house, with her head severed from her body.
CID and Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) teams were called to the scene, while several exhibits were collected as part of the investigation. Police said a sharp machete was allegedly used in the crime.
Goswami later surrendered before Dispur Police on Sunday night. He was subsequently handed over to Hatigaon Police Station, which is investigating the case.
During questioning, Goswami reportedly told police that he had “lost his temper” during an altercation with his wife on September 3 and killed her.
A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
Asked about the motive, DCP Pegu said the police were examining the couple’s disputes, particularly those related to their relationship.
On reports that Goswami was a drug addict, the DCP said police were yet to examine and verify that aspect.
Police also declined to comment on reports that Goswami had allegedly planned to feed his wife’s body to dogs, saying the investigation was still underway and further details would be shared after the facts are verified.
