GUWAHATI: The last rites of renowned Manipur musician Chongtham Vikram Singh, who died after an alleged assault in South Delhi, were performed in Imphal on Wednesday, September 9.

Singh’s mortal remains were brought to Imphal International Airport in the afternoon, where a large number of people gathered to pay their respects. The body was later taken to his residence in Thangmeiband, Imphal West.
Artists, musicians and members of the Manipur film fraternity joined Singh’s family and friends at his residence to offer floral tributes. His last rites were later performed at Khoyathong in Imphal East.
Singh’s younger brother, Chongtham Vivek, reportedly said the family was seeking justice while respecting the ongoing investigation into the incident.
“We respect the due course of investigation. However, the family is waiting for justice. Neither do we want to politicise the matter. Let this be the last such incident,” Vivek told reporters after the funeral.
He also urged the authorities to complete the investigation and take legal action against those responsible.
Singh, 55, was allegedly assaulted by a group of people near his residence at Kilokari Ashram in Delhi’s Sunlight Colony late on Sunday night. He was reportedly targeted after objecting to shouting and other disturbances outside his home. He later died from the injuries.
The Delhi Police have taken eight people into custody in connection with the case. According to police, the accused allegedly told investigators that they wanted to “teach him a lesson” for objecting to the noise but did not expect the assault to result in his death.
Police are also examining all aspects of the case, including a possible racial angle.
Singh was a prominent figure in Manipur’s rock music scene. He served as the lead guitarist of the legendary rock band Phoenix during the late 1980s and 1990s. He began his music career with Ultra Vires before joining Phoenix and later became part of another popular band, Eastern Dark.
He eventually moved to New Delhi, where he continued his career as a music teacher. He is survived by his wife and son.
