GUWAHATI: A man was detained by law enforcement authorities on Tuesday, May 12, after live bullets were found in his possession during security screening at the venue of the swearing-in ceremony of the Assam government in Guwahati.
The incident occurred at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, where preparations were underway for the oath-taking ceremony of Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was set to assume office for a second consecutive term.
Security personnel recovered a few rounds of live ammunition from the individual during routine checks at one of the entry points to the venue. The man was immediately taken into custody for questioning.
“He has been detained and is being taken to Basistha Police Station for further interrogation,” a police official said while speaking to GPlus.
Authorities clarified that no firearm or any other weapon was recovered from the individual during the search.
The incident took place shortly before Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya was scheduled to administer the oath of office and secrecy to Himanta Biswa Sarma and members of the new Council of Ministers.
The police have launched an investigation to uncover further details into the case.
