Meghalaya Delegation Arrives in Guwahati for Talks Amid Ongoing Tensions


 

GUWAHATI: A large delegation from Meghalaya arrived at Koinadhora in Guwahati on Saturday, August 22, for talks with their Assam counterparts amid continuing tensions along the Assam-Meghalaya border.

The delegation was escorted by Assam Police, with security stepped up along the route from Jorabat to Khanapara.

Meanwhile, vehicles registered in Assam and Meghalaya continued to be restricted from entering each other’s states for the third consecutive day.

Protests continued in Jorabat, Byrnihat and Umiam, with Assam Police, Meghalaya Police and central paramilitary forces deployed in large numbers in Jorabat to prevent any untoward law-and-order situation.

People travelling from Meghalaya are changing vehicles at Jorabat to continue their journey into Assam, while those travelling towards Meghalaya are doing the same.

The talks are expected to be followed by a press conference at Koinadhora, where announcements on the outcome of the discussions are expected.

Meanwhile, the Ri-Bhoi district administration has ordered liquor shops within its jurisdiction to remain closed amid the ongoing situation.
