Taking up a suo motu PIL on the damage caused during the Wednesday rally, a bench of Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew and Justice Wanlura Diengdoh termed the incidents serious.
The Court noted that the procession led to extensive damage to public property including government vehicles, outstation vehicles, and public transport vehicles.
It also endangered common citizens including school-going children, and involved desecration of statues of National Heroes.
Meghalaya Advocate General Amit Kumar submitted that authorities have taken steps and some office bearers of the Union have been arrested.
Noting that more intensive steps need to be taken by the authorities immediately to apprehend the perpetrators of these incidents and bring them to book, the court directed a ‘report of action taken’ to be filed on August 24.
